On the historic Downtown Denton Courthouse-on-the-Square
Denton Main Street Association will host its annual classic, hot rod and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles show, the Denton Arts & Autos Extravaganza on Saturday, September 9th, with plenty to see and do for the auto enthusiast, artist, shopper, and anyone interested in a day of fun in downtown with live music and good eats throughout the festival. This year the inter-active festival activities include the Chalk Fest competition open for all ages and kids’ craft and game activities. The event is from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. around the historic Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square, 110 W. Hickory Street. This festival expects to showcase more than 200 cars, trucks and motorcycles whose owners are competing for numerous awards, including the coveted Best of Show Award, first place in the original or modified category for each class, or a participant’s choice award. The specialty awards are also a favorite of the participants as they compete to win trophies that are old auto parts artistically redesigned by local artists. Best of Show winners in the car, truck, and motorcycle classes win cash prizes.
Festival attendees can also get in on the voting by choosing their favorite vehicles for whimsical awards, such as Best “Family Truckster” and Best “Diamond in the Rough” among others. The public can pick up a ballot at the event information booth on the day of the show or get online voting information on the website or social media. The Chalk Art Fest and competition attracts talented artists of all ages sketching drawings on the West Oak Street sidewalks a must-see during and after the event. Winners in three age categories can walk away with some cash prizes and the top winner of the competition gets $150 cash. More information on entry fees and applications are available on the website. Pre-registration is encouraged. F e s t i v a l g o e r s can shop and stroll through arts and crafts booths on the courthouse lawn and specialty boutiques, vintage stores, art galleries and studios in downtown Denton.
Attendees can bid on some nice items ranging from downtown goods and restaurant certificates to local entertainment packages at the silent auction inside the courthouse between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm. Live music starts at 10 am with Gumbo Brothers playing Zydeco Boogie, followed by The Silvertones playing some Texas Blues band at 11:15 am, and The Lowdown playing Soul/Rock/Funk favorites at 1:00 pm. The fall festival atmosphere is complete with vendors selling a variety of cuisines and festival foods, as well as tasty treats from any of downtown’s sweet treat shops, beverage tasting rooms, and restaurants. With all the activities and entertainment, this is the ideal way to spend a day or a weekend in Denton. General admission to the event is free. Check the Events page on the website at www.dentonmainstreet.org for information, entry deadlines and fees for entering a vehicle in the car show or entering the Chalk Fest competition.
